Hey guys,
I've been posting here for about a month now and I wanted to thank you all for your help with Freddy. We all depend on eachother's "know-how" to give our Igs the best possible lives...BUT...it occured to me this morning that we have been a little insensitive about something. MISTREATED IGS at PETSHOPS.
I'll admit that I didnt do any research about Igs before I got Freddy. I went to the tank, reached in, and grabbed one of the few that had a really nice color and didn't run away to fast. Then I got home and set up his newly bought "25 gallon tank" and fed him some "brocoli and lettuce" as per the directions of the petstore people. Needless to say, the following Saturday I spent the entire day reading about Igs and learned how to properly care for them, afterwhich I discovered that Freddy was a disaster. He was missing about 4 fingers/toes (out of ten), he was missing some spikes, and the reason he didnt run away was probably because he was too weak.
If I knew then what I know now, I still would have picked Freddy out of that bunch...why?? because I have the resources to help him. And many people that are shopping for pets also do, although I am aware that the majority dont. I think that when someone comes in here asking about how they should pick their Iguana, we should first ask if they are willing to spend the money that all of us spend on them. There are lots of Igs that are on the verge of sickness that if taken out in time, will grow to be healthy cool-a$$ igs. So Freddy is missing a few fingers...big deal, it gives him character. And thats the type of attitude I think we should take towards petshop igs.
FYI: About 2 months after I got Freddy I went back to the petshop (in Garden State Plaza in NJ) and saw the saddest thing...an Ig that was almost dead. It was black, very deformed, other igs were just sitting on top of it, and the workers at the shop had no idea. People would pass the tank in disgust because the sick ig was leaning right up against the tank window. I left after I informed the manager of what an A$$HOLE he was for letting that happen and saw the workers head for the tank. If we take this attitude towards petshop igs, I may never have to see that again.
Thanks for everything, and I hope you enjoyed the penny.
