see if this helps ... below is a drawing of an ig and a pic of a water dragon (sorry - don't know how to do links ...) an iguana will have a tympanic (tympanum)scale and a sub-tympanic scale on the side of it's head ... if it's a baby it won't have the jowls that older igs get (is that what you mean by 'throat pouch'???) but it WILL have a dewlap ...

IMHO,if your vet can't tell the difference, you need a new herp vet ....
