::Taken from David Krughoff's "Reptile Lighting 2000":: measurements in microwatts/cm2 in relation to ActiveUV Heat bulbs.
100 watt flood @ 1 foot distance
UVA production = 400
UVB prdouction = 50
Manufacturer's min. distance recommendations = 12"
100 watt flood @ 2 foot distance
UVA production = 110
UVB production = 12.5
*****End quote*****
Bear in mind that this is a "flood" type bulb. 100 watt SPOT bulbs are a totally different animal.
For example:
"100 watt spot @ 2 foot distance
UVA production = 1700
UVB production = 100
Manufacturer's min. distance recommendation = 18"-36"
100 watt spot @ 4' (personal note: FOUR FEET! We, as amateur herpers with enclosures in our homes may not have a use for this strong a bulb but the fact that one CAN obtain a bulb that produces more UV light than flo tubes AT FOUR FEET is an impressive point to me)
UVA production = 400
UVB production = 30
manufacturer's min. distance recommendation = 18"-36"
*****End quote*****
Now figures are also provided by Mr. Krughoff as supplied to him by Wild Inside. The figures, I believe,come from a study done by a J. Ball 1995. The study states that:
ZooMed ReptiSun 5.0 @ 1'
UVA = 23
UVB = 10
Vita - Light @ 1'
UVA = 6
UVB = 1.3
*****End Quote*****
Mr. Krughoff's "Reptile Lighting 2000" shed some interesting light on UV in general. In fact, I'm hoping to be able to afford a hand held radiometer myself in the near future so I may be able to replicate some of these studies.....
Part of the reason that it is not easy to find information regarding specific bulbs on Actives site is because the company wants to speak with individual customers in the hope of supplying the correct bulb for the customers enclosure.
Feel free to drop us a line if you have more Q's, Marisa. We'll do what we can to help answer them.....
