well, 1st of all, if you're not happy + conifdent in your current vet ~ got another ASAP ... or at least find one who is willing to consult the experts that Des so awesomely listed ...
*one* blood test, does NOT signify a problem ... if a certain level is *consistantly* too high/low, THAT *might* indicate cause for concern ...
while i DO think blood tests CAN be helpful, they are NOT always a true or accurate indicator of what exactly is going on ... when iZ was at death's door, his blood panel came back indicating that his kidneys were in fairly healthy shape ~ during the emergency exploratory surgery, it was discovered that his kidneys are actually quite damaged + were barely functioning ~ ~ ~ my point is, you can not accept one or even two, blood test results ALONE as a good indicator of health OR disease ...
from Mader's text:
... "Although rarely documented, reptiles showing a persistent, marked (ie: glucose values >200mg/dl) hyperglycemia and glucosuria are candidates for diabetes mellitus"
i think the key word is *persistant* ... also would be a wise move to check for glucosuria (sugar in urates) ... keep in mind that you HAVE to go by the individual lab's normal ranges !!! the lab where iZ has his blood sent lists the normal range for glucose as 50 - 150 but in Mader's book, *his* lab norms are 150 - 280 ... these numbers mean nothin without also looking at that PARTICULAR lab's normal ranges ...
DD's *choking* problems make me wonder if her throat/tongue aren't swollen ~ which makes me wonder about renal problems ... a very definite possibility considering her past history and a more real possibility than diabetes ...
charting is a VERY good idea! keep track of appetite, input as well as output ... make a point to notice if poop is getting more hard/dried + consistancy of urates ~ if they're thickened at all or if they're nice + wispy ...
i think the best thing you could do would be to find a vet you TRUST as well as to have that vet consult with one of the acknowledged experts ... but it seems doubtful that it is diabetes ...
good luck!
Bon. + iZ
