xta, I would encourage you to not fix the screen, and become a permanent home for the swifts. I used to think that I wanted them out of the chimney, and then decided to let them be. After all, they chose this house, and the babies come back to the place they were born to nest again, year after year, all the way from South America. They do suffer from natural habitat destruction, that's why they have adapted to living with us. They actually keep the flue clean, and you may not need a sweep, after all! You can have a fire from mid-October through Early April and not disturb them, as these are thier departure and arrival dates.. Anyway, just a thought.
