In Reply to: Blue Diamond Iguanas: How big do they get? Please Help! posted by Clint on July 21, 2001 at 08:37:59:

Blue Diamond iguanas get the same size as any other green iguana (up to 6 feet max) because they ARE any other green iguana. Unfortunately, Clint, this is a marketing ploy, and there really is no species, sub-species or any other kind of iguana which is a Blue Diamond. Some iguanas are more blue or slate colored depending on thier country of origin, but they're all green iguanas.

Don't let the pet store tell you that they will only get three feet long, and don't let them tell you that they don't need much room.

You should do extensive research on green iguanas BEFORE becoming an owner, as you will find that they are large, sometimes cranky lizards with VERY specific husbandry requirements as to size of housing, lighting, and especially diet. Many are abandoned or homeless because people had no idea what they were getting into, and pet stores are notorious for giving inadequate and incorrect information on green iguana care. This is a MAJOR commitment to an animal that can live for 20 years if properly cared for, and deserves the same level of care and respect that any animal does. They are not disposable because they are cheap.

If you are truly interested, and willing to make a commitment, this board is a great place to start. Lots of good folks and good info here. You might also consider a rescued iguana, rather than purchasing a new one. Far too many are imported, sold in pet stores, and left to die from poor care and lack of knowledge. If you're interested in a rescue, many here have rescued iguanas looking for homes. Here's a link to get your research started. There are many more. If you have questions, or need help, this is the place.

Best regards,

JohnT
