I've been studying to be a dog breeder (Boxers) for alomost 3 years now and have found that puppies (would assume it's the same for kittens) are not *born* w/ parasites but get them from the mothers milk once they nurse (this is why pups are de-wormed starting at 2 weeks and continue to be every 2 weeks until they stop nursing). According to what I've learned a puppy that has never nursed will not have worms unless it gets them from somewhere else. When a woman is pregnant the baby is protected in the sack of water (not sure how to spell the proper name of this but you know what I mean). The blood that goes to the baby comes thru the umbilical cord that is attached to the placenta. The mother and the baby do not share the same blood. The baby is living in the mother but does not share anything that can't be absorbed thru the placenta and carried thru the umbilical cord. Knowing this I assume it's the same way for dogs and cats. The pups and kittens are protected therefore will not be infected w/ a parasite until after being born. This is why I doubt ig's are born w/ worms/parasites...they don't nurse and are protected by an egg. After hatching it's a diferent story. I completly agree they can easily pick them up later though. Another small piece of info I've learned is parasites infect unhealthy animals...w/ worms being a parasite an ig that is kept healthy (a stressed ig is considered unhealthy) shouldn't have a problem although it never hurts to check. Same goes w/ fleas and your cats and dogs...keep 'em healthy and you won't have a flea problem (another word of advise...flea drops, powders, sprays, etc are not as safe as the package claims...your pet is much better off if fleas are prevented thru diet instead of treating the pet for fleas w/ chemicals...you wouldn't believe how much good a properly chosen diet that is *naturely* suited for the animal will do for it's health). Ok, so I can get carried away when dogs are brought up...there might be a lot of mis-informed people out there when it comes to ig's but w/ a little research you'll find it's just the same when it comes to the more common pets as well.;)
Sorry so long and slightly off topic...and to think this is the very short version.:P
