what's his enclosure made of? igs don't seem to be able to figure out invisible barriers like glass or plexiglass and will work + work + work ... if you do put paper or something on the sides, don't put dark paper on glass! it will have the effect of a mirror and you ig will be fighting with his reflection (even if it's a vague one!)
before iZ got his own room, he would try to nose open the door to his enclosure all the time ... (not to the point your's is tho!) it really helped increasing his roaming time ... i'd get home from work and just open his door and he seemed to really like that he could come + go 'as he pleased'! after a few days, he didn't always automatically come out and then alot of times when he did, he liked to sit on top of his enclosure ... just for a change of scenery *grin*
try more 'exercise time' for him ... and maybe inside of (or with) covering the sides, some nice 'silk' plants/greenery?

good luck!
:P + :)
