We were ONLY visited by animal health once a year. By USDA once a year. Unless there was a complaint, never by any local agencies (animal control, etc.) . This was in Missouri and just 3 years ago. They were considering more inspections on domestic animals (puppies, cats) but never said a thing about exotics including reptiles. The ONLY time we got visited by wildlife was when we applied for the permit to keep animals on a list either state or federal. And this was a joke : we applied for the keeping of alligator snappers for exhibition...they were already in the state legally but we were supposed to be interviewed and the caging requirements were supposed to be met. Of course they did (reqiurements)but before we could even get the turtles the situation was to be inspected by wildlife. First of all we had a very hard time to even convince the department to even come out. We had our permit in hand even before the inspection was done and it WAS suppose to be the other way around. Next when a wildlife agent finally showed up he asked to see the turtles and we had to remind him that the inspection stated that we were not suppose to have the turtles until the inspection was granted. Even though we were a full line pet store our we excelled in reptiles and birds. I was told later that while a wildlife agent was "in store" they had the right to look over the place to make sure there wasn't any infractions of other species native or non-native. This wildlife person spent a total of 3 minutes inspecting and stating that we were up for coed for the turtles and he left.
Funding ? Maybe. Non-knowlegdement ? Maybe. Non-manpower to do the job ? Maybe.

: The funding is being cut and most of these Departments NEED complaint letters to prove that this is a service that people want. So..start writing.
