Pet World for the last 10 years it was in business. Tell them folks what kind of one-of-the-kind of petstore we had. When we moved in back of the old Truman Corners where the shop was for years we did $865,000 in the first year of the new building. Things got tuff on rent, on-coming laws, where to not buy puppy mill dogs and employees taking advantage of us in the 9th year we had it. We were forced out on our lease after the buliding was sold to a group of investors. They wanted another $1,000 per month tacked on our already $4,500 montly payment. we said no way ! There was no way we could move our 10,000 square foot retail business into something smaller so we opt to close. It was a smart move for us. Notice how more closings are happening just in Kansas City with the privately owned pet stores. OR the ones still in business are really hitting bad times. With for sure restrictions coming down these days and in the furture, I'm not sorry that we closed. It gave me the chance to get into the full time reptile breeding thing and back to my art work.
Take care.....

: I am curious which pet shop ou are referring to in Missouri...around the KC area? Not to be nosy, but there are actually some good pet stores around (unfortunately, I worked at a TERRIBLE one my first year of college..which is why it is not still in business today. It was the Menagerie, which I'm not afraid to say because it no longer exists due to faulty management, careless lack of maintenance, parasite issues, and reliance upon TEENAGERS to run the store (not mention many other things that, being a young part-time employee, i had no control over). The only pet stores I know in the area are Noah's and Waldo Pets, both highly reputable (and with less exotics than the menagerie had)..so i am curious which one you are running (managing?)
: It's actually kind of nice to have someone "close to home" on an international forum!

: : We were ONLY visited by animal health once a year. By USDA once a year. Unless there was a complaint, never by any local agencies (animal control, etc.) . This was in Missouri and just 3 years ago. They were considering more inspections on domestic animals (puppies, cats) but never said a thing about exotics including reptiles. The ONLY time we got visited by wildlife was when we applied for the permit to keep animals on a list either state or federal. And this was a joke : we applied for the keeping of alligator snappers for exhibition...they were already in the state legally but we were supposed to be interviewed and the caging requirements were supposed to be met. Of course they did (reqiurements)but before we could even get the turtles the situation was to be inspected by wildlife. First of all we had a very hard time to even convince the department to even come out. We had our permit in hand even before the inspection was done and it WAS suppose to be the other way around. Next when a wildlife agent finally showed up he asked to see the turtles and we had to remind him that the inspection stated that we were not suppose to have the turtles until the inspection was granted. Even though we were a full line pet store our we excelled in reptiles and birds. I was told later that while a wildlife agent was "in store" they had the right to look over the place to make sure there wasn't any infractions of other species native or non-native. This wildlife person spent a total of 3 minutes inspecting and stating that we were up for coed for the turtles and he left.
: : Funding ? Maybe. Non-knowlegdement ? Maybe. Non-manpower to do the job ? Maybe.

: : : The funding is being cut and most of these Departments NEED complaint letters to prove that this is a service that people want. So..start writing.
