I do agree with you on this thread. Remember me telling you all that I stopped selling igs of the last 2 years of our pet store ? I think (my opinion) if the access of iguanas were a little more difficult to obtain there would be less problems on the almost "throw away pet syndrom" that igs now have. I have no idea how this would be done but if concerned pet stores (where most of these animals are coming from) would almost make it mandatory that ANY iguana sold would go through a VERY neccesary info situation on the perspective customer we may not be seeing some of these problems. I truly think that most folks buying an iguana doesn't really know ?...doesn't really care ?...how big one gets. I mean they see an iguana at a retail price of under $10-$12 dollars and can't concieve of money to be spent on a cage at a later date. Then in certain times of year I know of wholesale igs (imports and supposenly FARM raised) running as little as $1.75-$2.49 offered to the retail shops. Then (MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE ON SELLING IGUANAS) the little bitty mom & pop stores will buy 12-25 of these at this price and retail them at a "blowout" price of $4.99-$7.99 and will carry the very basic items for these igaunas. They might include 10 gallon tanks with screen lids as a come on and most will be lucky to afford books to offer perspective customers! It is a very messed up deal. The imports on some (some) reptiles has to decrease or be restricted one of these days to eliminate throw away reptile pets.

: requiring SOME sort of education process in order to be allowed to keep one. 99.8% of everything that we see both on this forum and in actuality is simply caused by complete and total human IGNORANCE. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard "I just got an iguana but don't know how to take care of it ?" I'd be able to hire someone to care for the lizards that we take in here. He77, the local animal shelter has called us twice in two weeks to help them out because, as we all know, shelters simply aren't set up to care for reptiles of any kind for the most part. Abandoned dogs and cats are more prevalent - for the moment. Unfortunately, iguanas are quickly catching up.
: 1/10% can be chalked up to "misinformation" which is next to impossible for the beginning iguana keeper to avoid. I would wholeheartedly give the remaining 1/10% to the shops that sell reptiles. There is simply no excuse for some of the things I'm told when I go into a shop "thinking of buying" an iguana.
: Sadly, I think little will change until such time as people on the state/federal level can be PROPERLY educated as to what is happening. Only then will we stand any chance of CORRECTLY addressing this growing problem as opposed to handling things in the manner that Maine and NYC have chosen. IMHO, this only pushes the problem "underground". I know of one owner in NYC who literally travels out to the island for vet care because she doesn't want it known that she is now keeping igs "illegally". More loose change from me at a ridiculous hour of the night....
