requiring SOME sort of education process in order to be allowed to keep one. 99.8% of everything that we see both on this forum and in actuality is simply caused by complete and total human IGNORANCE. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard "I just got an iguana but don't know how to take care of it ?" I'd be able to hire someone to care for the lizards that we take in here. He77, the local animal shelter has called us twice in two weeks to help them out because, as we all know, shelters simply aren't set up to care for reptiles of any kind for the most part. Abandoned dogs and cats are more prevalent - for the moment. Unfortunately, iguanas are quickly catching up.
1/10% can be chalked up to "misinformation" which is next to impossible for the beginning iguana keeper to avoid. I would wholeheartedly give the remaining 1/10% to the shops that sell reptiles. There is simply no excuse for some of the things I'm told when I go into a shop "thinking of buying" an iguana.
Sadly, I think little will change until such time as people on the state/federal level can be PROPERLY educated as to what is happening. Only then will we stand any chance of CORRECTLY addressing this growing problem as opposed to handling things in the manner that Maine and NYC have chosen. IMHO, this only pushes the problem "underground". I know of one owner in NYC who literally travels out to the island for vet care because she doesn't want it known that she is now keeping igs "illegally". More loose change from me at a ridiculous hour of the night....
