: I don't think anyone was implying that your friend is irresponsible, heck, none of us have even met her yet!! :)
: However, and I say this having been guilty of it myself a time or two in my life, sometimes, when we want something such as a pet really bad, we tend to forget to keep in mind what is in the best interest of everyone involved in the situation, including the animal. Most times when the best interest of the animal is not taken into consideration in the first place, it is them who suffer the most -even though that was never the intent of the human.
: So, what you will find here is many people who know the current problems with all the unwanted adult iguanas who get literally thrown away or placed in available foster care. They are trying to prevent that from happeneing at every avenue by making sure that they get out the best in care information and that includes the time demands of the iguana.
Hi there!
I am Helen, the girl Fiona has told you about. I would like to say thank you for all your advice. The Iggy I would be taking on is someones unwanted pet, I wouldnt actually go out and buy an Iguana from a pet shop, I used to work with Fish and Parrots and I am very much against against the importation of animals, however if I could give a home to an animal that needs one I most certainly will if I can. I already have a dog, Budgie, Bearded Dragon and a Redtail Boa, all of which I wouldnt have taken of if I hadnt looked into it first and knew that I had the time or the finance. Which is why I thank you all so much for the information you have supplied.
Having said that, I am glad that I have read up on what you have all told me! I knew the cost involved and the size it would grow to and the space it would take up, its diet and the amount of taming it would need. I was most unsure of the baby that will be born in September. My children I have now (twins) aged 7 are extremely good with the Bearded Dragon, the dog and the Budgie, although they dont handle the Boa. I was also concerned about the Bearded Dragon who has free roam of the window ledges and a lot of the living room, I would hate a bigger lizard to come along and trample on her turf!
So thanks again, you have all given me serious food for thought. I will give this a lot more consideration and find out a lot more about the individual Iguana involved before I make any rash decisions. Dont worry I am very responsible, escpecially about my kids and animals.
Helen.
