W/ your friend about to have a new baby I would say no to getting her first ig. As for waiting 12 years before getting one I don't agree. I brought my first ig home 3 months ago...I have a 6 yr old daughter, 4 yr old son, 3 Boxers (each a handful all on their own), 55 gallon aquarium and we just brought home 2 kittens. My husband feeds the fish and I keep the aquarium clean. He'll help w/ the dogs by letting them out to go potty but the rest is up to me. He helps w/ the kittens. He's a huge help when it comes to the kids and pretty much keeps the house clean on his own. But, when it comes to the ig he will admit he doesn't know enough about them and stays clear. I know the dangers of housing an ig w/ small children around. Both my kids know they are not aloud to touch Jade unless they ask me first. Then they must wash their hands right after. The kids like to stand and watch Jade in his cage but since the new has worn off him they very rarely ask to touch him anymore. I do feed him every morning before I go to work and have been going home at lunch this past week to feed again. Then I feed again when I get home from work. The kids know when I'm caring for any of our pets they either wait to ask me for something or they get their dad. It's not that hard to have pets and kids as long as the kids understand the rules. A newborn will not understand and must be put first for a while. I wouldn't suggest getting an ig until all the kids are old enough to understand they are dangerous and not to touch. My 4 year old understands this...he knows that "even though Jade is the cutest ig ever and so loveable (usually) Jade can make him sick if he touches him and he would have to go to the hospital and stay the night." That doesn't mean all 4 yr olds will understand this or that younger children can't...it depends on the kid and the situation. If properly and safely cared for the risk of salmonella should be slim. IMO Jade is no more of a risk to my kids health than me handling raw meat to prepare their dinner. As for money and an ig I'm not sure if $1500 is what I will be spending or not. I do know I spend about $5 every week and a 1/2 or so on his food (most of it is tossed before he has a chance to eat it), we just spent about $500 on a new enclosure that I don't plan to do again. His lighting consist of a UVB bulb (about $27) that will be changed every 6 months, a 150 watt bulb for heat (about $5 unless you opt to use a regular light bulb you use in your own home) and a 100 watt black light (about $7 unless you opt for the regular black light you would use in your own home). To keep the environment humid can be done by misting the ig w/ water daily or buying a misting system. Vet visits cost me about $28 a visit...every 6 months is about $60 a year. Other things can pop up that you must be prepared for but it's like that w/ any pet. The time consuming part is keeping the ig tame by handling daily...this is a must. I believe it's good for kids to grow up around/with pets...they can only learn from them. The type of pet one should get and the age the child should be before getting the pet depends on the child's ability to understand and follow rules. Of course the parent must be willing to put forth a tremendous effort to care for and keep the pet healthy and happy. JMO ;)
: My friend has two young children and a baby due soon and she is thinking of getting an iguana ,she has heard lots of horror stories about salmonella and needs advice and help from the exoerts . Is it possible to get salmonella from an iggy if so how does this happen, in your opinions is it a good idea to mix iggys and children (I dont mean in the same cage obviously lol).
: What should she be aware of or have you any advice that could help her thank you all so much fiona
