So many things can cause an EXPLOSION of endoparasites, like:
exposure to abrupt/severe temperature change,
acidic ph in gut
eating contaminated waste from another ig (coprophagy)
stress
eating contaminated w/worm eggs forage food: grasses, dandelion, clover (people w/ dogs or cats, take igs to the park, take note!)
eating dirt (igs lick at everything!)
eating produce that isn't washed with warm water (check the FDA site on produce contaminants you won't want to eat anything other than home grown!lolol)
are a few things that come to mind.

Routine deworming w/o having a fecal analysis done
isn't recommended for iguanas cuz the proper dosage is determined by weight. There are many OTC type dewormers that may NOT be effective in treating that partcular parasite if ya don't know which type it is. Treating an ig that may not have worms anyway will disrupt the normal gut flora needed to digest his food then you're looking at starting him on some type of probiotic. Most times once you've dewormed your ig...you gotta go back after 2-3 weeks and deworm again to get the eggs that have developed into adult worms. One dosing usually doesn't get the eggs just the adult worms. Recommended to have a fecal float on igs done every 6 months. Sometimes a direct fecal smear is needed vs. float which may comes back negative but symptoms remain. If you know your igs weight...you can drop off a poopie specimen for analysis and the vet will give you the dewormer/anthelmintic safe for your ig........Just better to have the vet do it unless you buy a microscope, solution, and reptile parasite book to do your own fecal floats!! Something I would like to do SOMEDAY!
