both Tif + Amy brought up good points + i agree with them ... i certainly don't think having a baby is an *automatic* reason to get rid of an ig ... but at the same time, if the baby came 1st, i'd do the same as Amy + try to discourage a 1st time reptile owner from getting one ...
i have 3 little grand-daughters and to be honest, i can't picture trying to juggle little humans and an ig *every day* ... not that it's not possible by any means!!! just that it's ALOT of work and it definitely helps to have hubby around when the girls are here AND it's iZ's bath/supper time!
if you always assume that every ig HAS salmonella and act accordingly ~ the actual risk of the baby/child getting salmonella is really very small ...
when the infant g-daughter is over + i have to handle iZ, i not only thoroughly wash my hands/arms, etc, but i change shirts as well after iZ + before the baby ...
the oldest girl is only 3yo and she does not have ANY contact with iZ (she admires him from afar!) ... he tends to be moody when the girls are here cuz he's jealous and even tho he's usually the sweetest dragon you can imagine, i also know 1st hand what those teeth are capable of ... iZ is not really an "out-going" ig like some are and i don't trust his reaction with ANY one, but especially not the little humans ... that *might* be over-reacting on my part, but it's what works for us ... :)
as far as antibacterial soap?
really, ANY liquid soap is going to do the job ... (you don't want to use a "bar" of soap cuz it's possible to leave traces of salmonella on the soap itself ...) ...
it's the rubbing your hands together with soap + water that gets rid of the germs ... think of a surgeon scrubbing up, going into the OR and make sure you scrub every little bit of your hands, wrists, etc, minimum of 10-15 seconds and you should be good to go! (btw, the CDC recommends *30* seconds which seems like overkill, the hospital i work at says 10 ... somewhere in the middle ... )
i don't think having an ig is any *more* dangerous than having any other kind of pet and bringing a new baby home ~ there's gonna be some major thinking + planning + rearranging involved no matter *what* kind of animal you have ... alot of it is good old common sense ... and that's what so many people seem to lack ... :(
hope the rambling helped ... :)
Bon.
