sorry about the long post,a nd i know this isnt the classified ads forum, but im really hoping someone can help me
about a year ago, i adopted an iguana from people who didnt take care of it very well [he was almost dead- they told me iceberg lettuce should be its main diet, and that he really enjoyed a dead pinky mouse once a week or so. they had him in a 55 gallon when he was about 2.5 feet, along with branches, water/food bowls and a huge land tortoise]. hes come a long way from then, hes definitly doing better as far as his health goes, but hes still very jittery around people. he barely tolerates my daily prescence to clean/feed him. usually he runs away, hides, and then gets into his defensive stance, although he will tolerate a nice rub on his neck when shedding once in a while. he wont hurt me unless i bother him, and even then he gives me a few warning hits [very light tail whips that almost never actually touch me.] hes never actually hit me hard enough to hurt, but he definitly would if bothered enough. basically, hes very very scared of humans and will run and avoid them, only attacting when forced. hes been living in his own room now for about 9 months, which i made by covering the floor of a 5' x 7' walk in closet with outdoor carpeting, setting up shelves, branches, vines, ladders, etc... to make a nice replica of a jungle, with plenty of lights and a nice humidifier and small room heater, all set up to make sure hes safe and comfy. in the summertime, he gets put outside for a few hours a day in a 4 x 4 x 4 cage i built for sunning, which he loves [and has come to tolerate the ride in a carry cage to and from his room for]. ive tried everything, from just sitting near him to giving him snacks to holding him to get him to calm down around me, but i think he was just too scarred from his previous owners and i dont have the time/energy to work any more with him. i feed him prepackages salads [romaine, frisee, curly endive, raddichio, etc....] as a small part of his diet [10% or less] and other assorted greens, always fresh, never frozen. basically, he gets the iguana den diet with a few extras that come in the bag. and theres always a fresh bowl full of dry ig food for him [although he will only eat one brand] for him just in case he eats all his food and wants more before i get home to check on him, which happens, at most, once a month or so. hes not fond of carrots, but ive noticed that although he doesnt eat them, he tends to go to his food bowl a lot faster if theyre there, maybe the color atracts him to it more. he also likes his food more in larger pieces he can rip into. ive noticed he always goes for the big pieces first [and its not only one food thats bigger so its not one food hes going for] he really is a lovely ig, a very beautiful orange and green male, around 3 feet last i could measure, and its a shame that he was so abused. i love him, and i hate to have to give him away, but in sept, im starting college and dorming, so i cant keep him, and no family will take him. ive gotten a few offers from people who want him b/c hes so beautiful [a lovely orange and green], but hes not affectionate and i'd hate to see him neglected again b/c of it, so i was hoping that someone could help me find someone to take him. if anyone can take him, i'll give you his sunning cage, which is made of pvc piping and plastic chicken wire fencing, and is in decent shape. it needs a little work, but its still functional, just a bit unsightly and i would give you all the pieces i have to fix it up. i built it in less than 4 hours so i know that redoing it wouldnt take that long. ilive in staten island, and will drive basically anywhere nearby to deliver him as i will not ship him by mail. i have until late august to find him a new home, and b/c i really hate having to see him go, im hoping to find him the best home possible. if you could take him, or in any other way help me, i would really really appreciate it. ive been trying to get into the iguana den chat room, but it isnt working.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...
