First let me thank everyone who posted a reply to my petsitting delima -I had orig. decided not to post my info but when someone actually took the time to bother to track me down they not only helped me greatly but it convinced me that it didn't matter who saw the post -I was only looking out for the best interest of the animals!
The owners came back to claim their animals today and were so thrilled with how great they looked they gave me double the rate I had asked for! We kept the water dragon in our hospital setup all week, complete with fogger and UVB that is never more than 12 inches from the animal -he lost all that retained shed and due to proper diet even gained a small amount of weight (so did the iguana)! The owners happily took the care booklets I made and we had a wonderful discussion about the changes I had implimented! Not only did they pay me double the rate but they left with a solid promise to get the animals to the vet ASAP!!
This week I found out that the iguana who lives with dear friends of ours is dieing. Those of you familiar with the Anna My Green Friend site might have seen the pictures of Rishi's eye all swelled up with a bacterial infection. The infection has returned to his eye as well as spread to his leg, 2 surgerys and a CATscan later and Rishi has some of the top reptile vets in the country stupmed. If anyone has had experience with reocurring bacterial infection or has a vet with extensive knowledge in this area, please send me some email so that maybe we can help find an answer to Rishi's illness before it's too late!
Summer is here and proof of that is the number of abandoned iguanas being reported. Last Monday the animal shelter we adopted our puppy from called us to ask us if we could take in an iguana that someone found in their driveway. We believe the iguana to be a male although his physical condition is so bad I can't be sure. We have named him Skeeter. He was taken to our vet on Tuesday where the lima bean sized absess on his jaw was lanced, it drained partially but returned within hours, the absess has settled into his jaw, we'll be giving him Baytril injections for the next 10 days, the spikes that aren't completely gone are broken down almost to his back, he has obvious MBD as well as being malnurished and dehydrated. The vet wormed him as he is so skinny you can literally see all his bones. Once again iguanas never cease to amaze me, after a some UV, heat and humidity Skeeter is eating well and has a great personality. It is our hope that he will be available for adoption some time in the next few months -sooner if the right family can be found.
Last but not least a product recomendation -Anyone who is really interested in learning more about UV light should pick up David Krughoff's books (I'm probably slaughtering the spelling on his name). I bought them for Mr D's birthday and we have learned more about UV then I ever thought possible. I purchased the Anna book and the lighting book and have found them a great source of info!!! Those books are also the place I got the idea to add a fogger to our setups to help increase humidity -they are working like a charm -much better than just adding a humidifier!!
