Just out of curiosity, where are you located? (I seem to remember a friend of my boyfriend's named Brett that just got a feisty iguana..not sure if it's you bu you fit the description!:)

About your hateful iggy, do not show fear in front of this animal...you just kind of have to bear down and deal with him..he must be handled at some point if he's ever going to calm down....depending on how long you've had him. If only for a few days to a couple weks, just let him be, and he will eventually settle down. Some iggs are just plain mean, though, and if it's an adult in breeding season, then you REALLY have to leave him alone for a while. Try hand-feeding him large collared or mustard leaves...he will lunge at you but he will also recognize you as a source of food and possibly gain some trust. Invest in a nice thick pair of welding gloves and take some time to let him get used to you. The best way to hold a fighting igg (or how I do it anyway) is to take your left arm and scoop him up under his belly and hold the BASE of the tail firmly (yet not too tight - don't squeeze!) until he calms down....yes he will gape --gape back! Like Xta says, it's a dominance relationship. As long as he recognizes you as dominant, he will eventually back off...but you have to keep at it! Don't be afraid...just give him everything he needs and hand feeding is a plus, too...until he becomes completely spoiled and dependent on it (which means you can't do it too much...but use your best judgement). Your fighting, hissing, whipping igg just needs time to recognize and get used to you...hope this helps...have a friend help you too (that's not afraid of iggs) and this may help you keep a hold of him...but you've gotta try!! He will only get meaner if you ignore him.
Sorry so long but got lots to say!
Good luck, take care!
Amy
