Hi
No one knows why they do it, for obvious reasons, but it is ( by many ) thought to be caused by lack of minerals. The theory is not unreasonable, since many animals do just that, eat soil or equal, to get minerals. In our cages, there are other things than soil and maybe that's one of the reasons that they ingest for instance pine and such substrates. My thought, still, is that given the right balance, the risk decreases heavily. I may be out of it, but it's not an unreasonable thought. Animals have an increadible feeling for what they need, as do we ( children, for instance, have shown that they change their preferences of food over a long period, which many times gives a good balance counting the whole period!).
STILL, I'm not recommending the use of "dangerous" substrates, I'm just giving air to my thoughts.
