To be honest, Fred.. It shouldn't really matter "how long it takes" for an iguana to reach full size. From the sound of that statement alone it would seem that you're banking on either being able to convince your mother that "it'll be OK" once you've got an ig... You're hoping to have moved out of the house before the ig reaches the entirely realistic 6-8 feet.... OR you figure that you can just give it away once Mom decides that it's too big. NONE of which are acceptable courses of action.
The first year of it's life alone an iguana can conceivably triple it's size from hatchling stage. You're looking at 3'+ within 2-3 years maximum IF the iguana is properly cared for.
I guess the first question to ask is whether or not you are absolutely prepared to take an iguana? How much research have you done so far ? Know your heat/light/diet well? Will there be room in your house 2 years from now for an enclosure measuring 6'x6'x3' MINIMUM ? Even better - is there an entire room that you can dedicate to an iguana, meaning Not a whole heck of anything else going on in there except an iguana living in there ? Are you prepared to care for this iguana for possibly the next 20 years if cared for properly ?
I'd be willing to bet that 1.) Mom isn't the biggest reptile fan to begin with - and there's nothing wrong with that, they aren't for everyone. And 2.) SINCE she may not be a big fan. Mom's afraid that SHE may end up having to try and take care of the ig at some point....
Lastly (for now) where were you planning on getting this iguana ?
