A few weeks ago someone posted concerns about their vet prescribing mealworms to their pet iguana. I responded with a basic iguana diet, under the heading of "your vet is an Idiot!!"
only to have Travis give me a bit of grief over it. He wanted me to tell him the specific studies that suggested that iguanas are strict herbivores. Well, here it is. In the journal of herpetology there is an article titled "The Diet of a Generalized Folivore Iguana iguana in Panama" A. Stanly examined the stomach contents of 31 wild iguanas, all of which contained ONLY plant material. It does however acknowledge that on occasion an insect MAY be inadvertently eaten if it is on the leaf material that is being consumed by the iguana. However, occasional insects make up an immeasurable percentage of the iguanas over all diet. This is printed information was printed in Reptiles Magazine in the vet Q&A by Douglas Mader in response to a Q&A column in the Miami Harold, in which their vet stated that iguanas are carnivorous and need meat in their diet, and that cat and dog food are good for them. Mader refereed to the column/article as Abominable. I agree. and while recommending mealworms in small amounts may not be as abominable, It still gets the ball rolling in the wrong direction. There is no reason to EVER feed your iguana ANY animal protein, and if your vet or anyone else prescribes mealworms or any other animal protein to your iguana, he or she is an idiot. It is as simple as that.
