First, we'd like to thank everyone that sent us email with good thoughts for Mel. They are very much appreciated!! I'm sorry we haven't been very good at getting back to people lately but it's been crazy around here with 2 gravid females, a house under major renovations and trying to put our rental unit back together and then the hubby deciding to rewire the electric on the house .... whew!! I need a vacation!! lol
::SIGH:: Well, we thought we were on to something today. About noon time I went in to check on Mel in the tub and she had laid an egg right there in the water! One little egg sitting there in some feces and urate. I was elated and thought "oh yea we're finally gonna end all this mess". That was the only egg she laid all day.
She had an appointment set up to go in for surgery to remove her eggs and ovaries in the morning but we've had another change of plans. The vet thinks we should let her try to lay them on her own. So, early in the morning we are taking her to the vet for a shot of neocalglucon and oxytocin. We also think Mel broke one of her toes while she's been rampaging around the house and so we'll have him look at that too.
The vet tells me not to worry and we had a very long and somewhat confusing conversation about egg binding today. He assures me that Mel will be fine and that even the oxytocin injection is no guarentee that she will lay all her eggs together. He keeps trying to remind me that there are no absolutes, especially when it comes to iguanas. He even went as far as to cite a case in which he gave oxytocin shots to one iguana and it took her 2 weeks to lay all her eggs. I can honestly say that I am looking forward to having all our females spayed because I don't think I can go through this 4 or 5 times a year, each year.
Whoever said caring for an iguana was easy was a moron!! There has been nothing easy about this with Mel and there are days it's so frustrating, mostly because she can't tell me what if anything is wrong. She is however very alert and active and has found a new love in hiding under our bed .... I don't care where she lays the durn eggs as long as she lays them!!!
Thanks again to everyone and we'll keep you posted!
