Sounds to me that if you're handling your iguana and he's losing spikes, you are being far too rough with him. Try wrapping your iguana in a towel with is head and tail exposed and talk gently while stroking him at the same time. Or, just try petting him while he's in his enclosure. I can't imagine spikes coming off while holding an igauna? You aren't picking at the spikes before they are ready to shed, are you?
