Yes, Steve... That's about what my 6x6x3 is going to cost when I'm done with it. The electronics alone were $200 and yes, that did incluse a 36" Lampi fixture from Home Depot. And, unfortunately, the wood came from HD as well. I've never seen so many hockey sticks outside of a sporting goods store.
Living in New England can be detrimental to your wallet. Plexi for the doors is free this time otherwise that probably would've pushed the cost closer to $1000. And that figure is by building it myself. If someone were to hire a person to build an enclosure for them you could EASILY be looking at over $1000. Fortunately, I can do it myself. No "wallpapery stuff" here though. 5 coats of hardwood floor quality poly to seal the wood. That way I know the UV won't break it down so quickly.
And even if you CAN put a suitable enclosure together you still need to factor in the rest of the expenses. Keeping an iguana is NOT cheap. When you factor in heating fuel and electricity usage it definitely adds up. Many people don't realize that.
