it's time to find a vet who CARES about the animals s/he treats!

i am truly APPALLED that a vet ~ a *trained* medical professional* !!! ~ would think that an animal ~ ANY ANIMAL! ~ does NOT need to be treated when a part of it's body FALLS OFF ... please please PUH-LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE find a better vet!

the people here who know me are prob'ly worn out hearing me + my paranoia with infection (*grin*) but here is *my* point of view:

igs are cold-blooded, they just naturally heal slower than mammals ... because they heal slowly ANYway, they are prone to infections ...
now the problem is that it is VERY possible for an ig to develop an infection that shows such tiny little symptoms, that those symptoms get 'pooh-poohed' by the vet (and/or the owner) ... again, it is VERY possible for that little infection to spread thru the ig's body and do either some MAJOR damage to vital organs and/or kill the ig ...

i am passionately Paranoid about this because it happened to me ~ we still DON'T KNOW for sure the cause of the original infection that started it with iZ ~ i DO know that he should have died 18 months ago because the so-called 'iguana-vet' that i saw at that time, didn't know what was wrong ...

keep reading!!! i'm getting to be point!!

when i tracked down a *real* ig-vet ~ 2+ hours away ~ he wasn't even all the way into the exam room where iZ + i were, he could tell from the doorway that iZ was in renal failure, it was THAT OBVIOUS TO A TRAINED DOCTOR WHO CARES about the animals he treats ... we didn't find out WHY he was in renal failure until 3 days later when the doc did emergency exploratory surgery to find out what was going on ... a kidney biopsy showed that he had massive kidney damage Due to a Low-Grade Bacterial Infection that had spread throughout his body and almost destroyed his kidneys AND him ... for gawd's sake, iZ's kidneys were the size of tennis balls but the 'ig-vet' before couldn't feel anything wrong!!!

keep reading!!! i'm getting to be point!!

because *I* did not have a qualified, knowledgeable, CARING IG-vet, iZ almost died ... in 18 months, he has been thru 2 major surgeries ... after the 1st one, he had a seizure + lost all use of his back legs + feet ... i had to syringe feed him a *liquid* diet for 6 weeks because his body was too weak to handle solid food ... his 2nd surgery was to remove a huge bladder stone that he is now always prone to because his kidneys + metabolism are f***ed up ...

WHY????

i think it prob'ly goes back to the little tiny bump on his jaw that i took him to the original vet for TWICE and the guy "didn't think it was anything" and refused to treat it and/or lance it ..... but we'll never know for sure ...

my point IS that you obviously care about this ig and are concerned or you wouldn't have taken the time to find this forum and ask about him ... FIND a doctor for him who is as concerned as YOU are for the health + happiness of this ig! there are alot of things that we can help with and tell you about our opinions + experience, etc, etc ... but this is beyond what ANYone can do on-line, sight unseen ... and if that means you have to bribe a friend to drive you Xhours to get to a real vet, then do it! your ig deserves the best and you deserve the best FOR him!

*whew* *ok, i'm done with the soap box now*
Bon.

pS ... iZ slowly regained full use of his legs/feet over several months + they are now as strong as ever ... he is *finally* back up to his pre-sickness weight of 11+ pounds + is 5'6" stl, 20" svl ... he's 5 ½ yo and is the love of my life ...
