: Sue2 and I went to a couple of pet stores today. One pet store is sellig a small adult iguana. Both ears are swollen. One of the ears looks like it is ready to pop. Course the kid at teh pet store said he'd seen this plenty of times, till three people told him something was wrong. Has anybody ever seen this?
Definately sounds like an infection but it's highly unlikely that it would be infectious. Iguanas and other reptiles rarely produce liquid pus (suppurative inflammation). More commonly infection results in a caseation necrosis producing a thick cheeselike substance that has to be surgically removed to facilitate recovery and healing. Antibiotics alone won't work! Fortunately, if treated properly, it is not a serious condition and animals usually recover uneventfully. Unfortunately, the cost of this procedure will likely exceed the monetary value of the animal and pet store owners often do not value these little guys much beyond that. Good luck!
