Jim Hatfield tells of his iguana Za as having a congenital ear problem that caused symptoms as you describe, but only on one side. It eventually required surgery. If you look carefully at the cover, you can see that Za's ear is swollen and misshapen. I don't know if this is relative to your pet shop Igs, but the statement that they had been this way for a long time reminded me of this.....
