Actually, we were looking to go with wood and then use the sheets of melamine like substance on the inside (glued to wood). I, too, am a fan of melamine and my other cages are made of quality melamine. The problem here is I cannot find a good quality melamine to easily build a cage with myself and my husband really doesn't like melamine because it is heavy and he doesn't like particle board insides. They kind they have here is more paperlike coating that is NOT water resistant like countertop surfaces.
It really isn't at all very cheap to cover the inside of plywood with the melamine like surface, but it is thinner and lighter. We priced it at home depot and this cage is going to take a lot of time and money! Plexiglass is pricey too but we plan to have two doors that open from hinges with plexi inset AND a side window of plexi.
