the ONLY way a heat rock is TOTALLY SAFE is if it's NOT plugged in ... period!

once plugged in, there is NO guarantee that it is going to function in a safe manner ~ they tend to overheat and wrapping them in a towel is only going to create MORE of a fire hazard ... heat rocks HAVE been known to short curcuit and start house fires ... they're really not safe for the ig OR you ... and SO many igs have been burned and BADLY burned that IMHO it really is NOT worth the risk ...

the problem is that igs sense heat differently than we do ... they do not realize they are being hurt until they are REALLY HURT and then it is too late (check out link below) ... they are 'built' to sense heat from above, like from the sun ... their bodies don't know how to process heat from below ... (make sense?) ...

if the enclosure is warm enough, you shouldn't need an alternate source of warmth ... but ... one safe alternative is a heating pad made for humans, turned on *Low* ... (let's face it, stuff made for humans is alot more regulated and inspected than anything made for animals) ... iZ has heating pads ~ one is on his "supper shelf" in the living room cuz he comes downstairs from his 85 degree room for social time in the afternoon-early evening and the living room is only 85 degrees in the summer months (*grin*) ...

if you need to increase the warmth of the enclosure itself, scroll down the forum a bit and check out the post on Radient Heat Panels we were just discussing them and they're a good, safe source of heat ...

so unplug it ok?
best wishes!!!
Bon.
