I wondered that myself . So today I conducted a little experiment of my own . I used one Vaporizer ( steam type ) one humidifier ( cool mist type you know the ones with the spinney thing ) one humidifier ( ultrasonic type ) and one humidifier ( wick type ) . I tested each from a distance of three feet two feet one foot and touching using a fresh pair of shorts each time with a sub straight of Fruit of the loom briefs .
#1 Vaporizer ( steam type )
From 3 feet a little warm but no condensation after 5 min
From 2 feet warmer a small amount of condensation after 5 min
From 1 foot very warm but only minimal condensation after 5 min
Sitting directly on the unit could only be maintained for 1 minute 22 seconds VERY hot but surprisingly little condensation
#2 humidifier ( cool mist type )
From three feet nothing after 5 min
From two feet nothing after 5 min
From one foot a little moisture after 5 min
Sitting directly on the unit a very wet spot where contact was made with the output after 5 min
#3 humidifier ( ultrasonic type )
From three foot nothing after 5 min
From two feet nothing after 5 min
From one foot nothing after 5 min
Sitting directly on the unit barely a damp spot at all after 5 min
#4 humidifier ( wick type )
From three feet nothing after 5 min
From two feet nothing after 5 min
From one foot nothing after 5 min
Sitting directly on the unit not even a damp spot after 5 min
I hope this study done under strict laboratory conditions helps . Please let me know of any others studies that need doing .
