: I got my Ig to the vet this morning. The vet looked him over, squeezed and felt him, looked in his mouth and pronounced him the most healthy looking Ig he had seen in some time! I said that can't be, I know he hasn't eaten or drank anything in two days. The vet said he was just being stubborn because I had switched him from dry food
: back to greens. He gave him a dose of something
: for parasites just in case, and told me to take my Ig home, open his mouth and stick in a few chopped strawberries, grapes, watermellon, or
: any other fruit that contains alot of water.
: The vet said not to feed him just dry food but to
: mix a little of the dry food in with his greens
: (which is what I had been doing before he started eating dry food only).
: The vet also showed me a way to hold my Ig so that
: I could control him and get his mouth open, and the vet also clipped my Igs nails.
: Sure enough, when I got home, my Ig swollowed
: about 4 big Raspberries I put in his mouth.
: I feel better knowing I got some liquid in him.
: Hopefully he'll resume eating and going to the bathroom in the next few days.
George,
Just because your iguana has not eaten or drank for a few day may not be a problem. I once lost a young iguana in my house for a month. It was in great condition when I lost it and was in great condition when I found it. It was amazing, by looking at it you would not know that it had been hiding in a closet for so long. Before the iguana farms were set up in central america, Iguanas would sometimes spend months in a holding box and in shipment. Sad to say little food if any were given to them. But still many made it to the petshops. SO, if they are in good health and they dont eat or drink for a week don't worry.
AS for using a dry food, I have iguanas that have been on Reed's Iguana Food since 1988 and they are doing fine. Fresh water is always available. But keep in mind that iguanas can have a wide range of problems other than food the same as humans have a wide range of problems.
Keep a watchful eye, when iguanas do have problems it can be so hard to tell a difference in their looks or behavior. It's better to ask than loose your animal. When it comes to your iguana's health, there are no stupid questions.
