Very common with iguana tails (I emailed you too!) ...The betadine/iodine is terrific to prevent infection...but what has worked fantastically for problems like this in my experience is ZINC OXIDE....buy a tube of it (first aid section of major drug stores) Put on liberally every night or early am after youve applied the betadine....Neosporin/antibiotic ointments just do not provide the emollients, water tight seal that zinc oxide would for this situation..save it for infection, open wounds.
Since there's not alot of blood circulation to the tail...healing is rather slow (reptiles slow to heal anyway right ;-) Do this for a few weeks to a couple of months depending on how bad the cracks,scabs are....youre right not to sweat the small stuff! You sound like you know when its time to get your ig to a vet from what youre telling us about his tail this doesn't sound like one of those times to me either.
