It's true: Your baby iguana is just smelling things in the air when she licks. Iguanas use their tongue for smelling, much like snakes do.
As for being worried that she may bite you, don't be. Sure, you should be cautious, but if you're scared she will bite you, you may become scared of her and not spend time holding her each day. That would be the worse thing for her. Hold her, talk to her, carry her around each day. Sooth her when she's stressed, stroke her head as she's falling asleep each night, and make sure to spend as much physical time with her as you possibly can on a daily basis. If you worry she will bite you, then the chances of her becoming highly tame and social are slim because you'll start to fear her. Our iguana has only bitten once, and it was during feeding time. We think she mistakenly thought my boyfriend's nose was food and took a little chomp on it. It bled a little bit, but healed fine. She's never done it since. If you get them used to being handled, and use to your touch, it is unlikely that they will start to bite you.
