: for my unborn baby. I posted on another site & my question wasn't fully answered, so they sent me here. I am not not worried about salmonella. I do want info on colera(sp)being transferred to unborn baby. My ob doesn't know ,&she said it's better to be safe. Does anyone know of iguanas carring colera & where can I find that info at. TIA!! Renee
Renee, cholera is not associated with reptiles. It is usually transmitted through contaminated water or shellfish from those waters. Salmonella is, in fact, the organism that you should concern yourself with. There have been several cases of infant death reported by the CDC that were directly linked to Salmonella from pet reptiles (primarily iguanas). Being aware of the potential danger will allow you to take the appropriate hygiene precautions that will keep your baby safe and allow you to keep your pet as well.
