They do not lay eggs on the ig itself.
They lay eggs on the enclosure (especially wood) , hatch, feed on the ig, lay more eggs, and die.
What worked for me was to move the igs into sterile enclosures for 3-4 weeks, plastic off (can buy sheets at any hardware store). I then placed several dog/cat flea collars in the enclosures. This will kill the mites in the enclosure.
Bath the ig (don't know if I like thge idea of holding it underwater), and place in the sterile tank. No place to lay eggs means that if there was still mites missed on the ig (there always will be!!) they will die without laying eggs.
Done deal.
