iZ broke his tail a while back (it's since healed + all is fine) ... but his wasn't to the extent that it sounds like your's is ...

you HAVE to get to an ig-vet ASAP ... if the bone is broken in half (iZ's was "just" cracked) the tail will more than likely need to be amputated ~ igs don't take kindly to their tail being splinted ...

the ig MUST be on antibiotics to PREVENT infection ... with such an extensive injury in a cold-blooded/slow-healing animal, you do NOT wait to "see if" an infection occurs ~ you actively prevent it ... (Baytril is the antibiotic of choice for igs)

your ig is in PAIN and that's why he's reacting the way he is and avoiding you ~ the best thing you can do right now is to help him calm down and prevent him from hurting himself even more ... best way to do this is to LEAVE HIM ALONE until you are actually ready to walk out the door on your way to the vet ... IF you can get close enough to him, i'd squirt some full-strength betadine on the open area ~ but that's ALL ... don't touch, don't try to examine, etc ... otherwise ~ turn up his heat to 85-90 degrees and turn the lights OUT ... put him into the SLEEP mode so that he's still + hopefully will relax a bit ...

good luck + let us know how things work out!
Bon. + iZ
