I know people use them and they are much better than heat rocks, but if your cage is warm enough from the heat lamps, there is really no need for one. Check the temps with a thermometer and look at the ranges from the shady area to the hottest. Since you just got him, he is probably scared and may not eat much & hide a lot in the beginning. Have you checked his stool for parasites? (this would be highly reccommended if his appetite isn't great as well) I would give him a little time if the temps are within range. If there is a very cold area in the tank, perhaps you do need one, but every animal should have a cooler area to escape to if they want. Jif could probably help out since she knows their personalities and what temps they require more than I do.
