The femoral pores under the legs of males are much larger than in females (not neccessarily the same size). They can sometimes have a protruding waxy substance inside the pores-- they spread their scent on everything. Males have bulges under their tail, are generally bigger and bulkier-- especially their jowls. I don't recall ever reading about a notch in the dewlap-- a notch could merely be an injury as well. If you have a male, he may mate with inanimate objects, leaving behind semen--which appears as a light colored liquid. Also, males can have this build up if they do not release it-- and it solidifies into seminal plugs which they can then release at will unless they become stuck in the vent (sometimes they release these when going to the bathroom) These are sack-like or pod-like objects that can be beige or orangeish, dry and twisted or moist. (I'm ready to puke now- LOL) Warm bathtub soaks help them release the seminal plugs. Males tend to be more aggressive especially during breeding season.
I would suggest finding a more qualified herp vet-- especially if you plan to let him cut your iguana open! This is very scarey and you don't want just anyone doing surgery especially. There is a list of qualified herp vets online (hopefully someone will post this after reading this) And, I will post a link you should check out to read up further on the sex of your igunana as well as other helpful care tips. Also, one of the best books you could own would be James Hatfield's Giant Green Iguana Manual.
: I have a question as to the sex of our green iguana. It is approximately a year and a half old but I don't know how old they have to be before you can positively sex them. From what I read on the internet it has all of the signs of being a male; the pores on it's legs are all the same size, it has a notch in it's dewlap, the base of it's tail looks slightly swollen and mushy. The local vet here opened it up because it had abcesses in it's stomach and he said he saw the ovaries, although he doens't know a whole lot about reptiles. Also I read on the internet that males sometimes "masturbate" and the lizard has secreted a semen like discharge twice. So my question is, how old do green iguanas have to be before you can positively sex them and what exactly is the semen like discharge? Thanks in advance!
