Well HD, you have put it so plainly and obviously that I have to agree with you this time.
I would never NOT consult my vet with any potential problem, however, I DO need to hear other people on the forum's experiences to ensure my vet is on the ball. It is a form of getting a second opinion, from those who have experience. (In fact, it is this forum that sent me vet-hunting after you all made me realize that my dear vet of ten years is no good for the iguanas.) It's great to hear the forum sending people marching to their vets...sometimes people are reluctant to go if they are not sure they absolutely have to, and need to be told. Again, a form of second opinion.
But to self-diagnose or administer meds......now that's a whole different ball game. SCAREY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MY EXAMPLE: Iggy has started to get mouth-rot.
How do I know?
Because I have heard it described so many times here on the forum.
Would I have even noticed it if I had never been here?
NO!! I would have thought it was food stuck on her lips.
What did I do?
We went to the vet on Saturday for an official diagnosis and treatment! You will see there was no post from me asking what to do, as I already knew "Go to a vet" is the answer.
However, I am not 100% happy with his treatment, and if it doesn't clear up soon, or gets worse...I *will* be posting here to compare experiences! If someone answers with, "Your vet should be prescribing toothpaste for her", I will tell my vet that's what's been said. But HE will make that final treatment decision, and explain it to me as it relates to MY iguana's situation. And btw he is always interested to hear what the "forum thought" is on many little things. He likes to hear some of the stories, as he doesn't have time to look beyond a few sites... and with three lizards and three cats, I spend a lot of time there LOL!
But I will now officially throw in my vote with you - supporting private emails with the administering-type details of meds; and no replacing of veterinary advice.
Wendy. (a big fan of Harry's -- his famous picture hangs in our den -- hope that's not illegal) Come to think of it - some of my daycare boys know who Harry is! I showed them what Iggy is growing into... no new little iguana owners coming from here.
