Posted by Christy on February 04, 2001 at 04:44:21:

Hello everyone, we just got ourselves a darling little 3 year old male iguana. We purchased him from a pet store (yes I know the horror stories of pet stores, but this is one of the better ones) he was apparently surrendered to the store a year ago after being in a 10 gallon tank, fed some dry food stuff, never given any fresh veggies or fruits, his tail has either been torn off or he dropped it out of fear but its obviously been lost. I have been doing research and had been working hard to understand iguana's Before purchasing one. We went to the store to just look, after hearing his story about a week and half ago over the phone I hadn't been able to get him off my mind.. So we went to check, when I walked near the iguana tanks, there was two tanks, one with a young one and the other with "Rupert" in it. There were two teens who grabbed the young one as soon as I walked near the tank worrying I was intrested I guess, then I heard them talking about "rupert" and how he would fit in there 10 gallon tank, I lied and said he was mine I had put him on hold and was just waiting for the clerk, NOW my husband and I had both said we were going to LOOK not buy as we had NOTHING ready at home for him. We did some talking and convincing and finally brought him home. His new name is Double D my daughters named him that a big change from three little girls crying NO you cant take him, hes mean he will eat our other pets, he will turn into and alligator LOL (they are 5,4, and 2 years old). They have adjusted quite well have petted him twice and talk to him and choose his new name.
here is what I know and I am still researching anything im missing or should be doing is GREATLY appreciated.
Right now we have him in a temporary tank (till this next weekend)
He is in a HUGE rubbermaid clear tote, newspaper on bottom , fresh water bowl, carrots and grapes as we were told these are his favs. I do understand collard greens, mustard, and I have a list saved of others are best for him.
We have the UVB light and a heat lamp for heat right now, I know the tank should be at 80 to 85 for coolest parts and in the 90's for under the basking light. I do understand they can live up to 20 years, have wicked tails, sharp teeth, and Sharp nails (I have 5 little scratches all ready where DD has wrapped himself around my arm). He does look on the small side but I havent measured him as I dont want to stress him out to much, also havent taken any pics yet, hes not ready for that. Im sure im missing something I want to say but its 6 am so Ill go for now and defintly be back. Thanks fo any and all help.
