I had plexiglass in my last cage and never replaced it (it does get scratched). We now have glass doors in our 2 newer cages and have had to replace them in one cage because it kept chipping from all the opening and handling (when taking out for cleaning). We would tape off the corners at first, but eventually we just couldn't deal with the possible injury or cracking anymore. My husband got some nice thick plexi to replace the doors (I was so angry at him for doing most of the damage to the glass and was sure the plexi wouldn't be as good) but I have to say it is great because it is lighter and easier to open and handle. And there is no more fear when cleaning that the whole thing is going to shatter apart. I think I'll stick with plexi except in aquarium type situations. We still have a glass front to our Bearded Dragon cage and so far there has been no need to replace that-- we haven't had to remove his glass as often, however.
: Why not use glass? It is much more durable, and can be cheaper than plexi. I just finished taking all the plexi out of a cage, and I'm replacing it all with glass because it will hold up better in the long run. Also, if you move or decide to make a bigger enclosure, glass will increase the resale value of your current enclosure.
