Marcia, your statement about heating a room is what we do. Bug (our ig) lives in a 6x6x3.5 wood and wire enclosure in our bathroom, which is heated and humidified as necessary. We live in an old farmhouse with a bathroom large enough to do this. I don't know if you have enough room for this, but it works very well. Now the expense of heating and humidifying the entire room...... well, it gets expensive. As to the lights, they're on the wire top, and the first basking shelf is 12" under them. Hope this helps....
