when my son was 18 he thought that bringing home a cute little iglet was a cool thing to do. keep in mind he was 18 and out of high school. he got bored with it within 2 months. he refused to take care of him, saying he didnt need that much food or water, or holding time. i felt very sorry for the little guy and started reading up about the care for him.
what i found out was that we had to spend a lot of money on lighting ($30.00 uvb tube, which needs replaced every 6 months, plus the fixture), heating, food and vet bills. not to mention, there is no such thing as a cheap cage.
i found out that i, not him, had to go to the store every 5 days and buy greens and veggies and fruit, for the little guy.
i, not him, also had to find the time everyday to hold and hold this guy, so he would become calmer and more trusting of us...this last one takes a lot of work and dedication. my 18 year old did not have it in him, there were girls and cars and basketball and jobs and did i mention girls???
this post is not to scare you away, iguanas are a very rewarding animal to raise, but only if you are willing to give it your all. this is not an easy low maintenence pet....however, if you stick with them, they are awesome animals.
good luck and keep reading,

: Hello,
: Could I get some advise from whoever wants to give it?
:
: My son (10 years old) would like to get an iguana.
: We are at the "research" stage. And we won't buy one until we are satisfied that he is able to care for it. (With my help of course.)
: Were looking at starting with a juvie. Something about 12" long.
: We are aware of the size it will become and we do have the space to offer it as needed.
: What would be the best enclosure to start with?
: Aqarium or cage? Heat lamp, light, or undertank? Or both? Male, female, does it matter?
: Any advise will be wonderful. Is a petstore an ok source or should we look somewhere else? We live in central Illinois so our choices are limited.
: Thanks in advance!
: Troy
