If YOU are willing to accept the responsibilites as PRIMARY caretaker after studying up on all the facts... then ADOPT one. There are many out there at all ages looking for a good home that have been discarded by other people. Iguanas are not the best for children's pets-- they can injure and need to be kept very clean. If YOU like iguanas and want to take this on and are willing to take him to a qualified herp vet 2x per year or as needed and provide all the neccessary room and expensive lighting/heating, and buy the right nutrious veggies, then I say WELCOME TO IGUANA OWNERSHIP!
Remember they grow to 6 feet!!!! They are a handful so you've got to love 'em before putting up with one! You found the right forum should you decide to go through with this-- and I COMMEND you on researching before you buy!

2 sites to check out and that are invaluable for info. Also, if you buy one book, buy James Hatfield's Iguana Manual.

Good luck in your decision.

: Hello,

: Could I get some advise from whoever wants to give it?
:
: My son (10 years old) would like to get an iguana.
: We are at the "research" stage. And we won't buy one until we are satisfied that he is able to care for it. (With my help of course.)

: Were looking at starting with a juvie. Something about 12" long.
: We are aware of the size it will become and we do have the space to offer it as needed.

: What would be the best enclosure to start with?
: Aqarium or cage? Heat lamp, light, or undertank? Or both? Male, female, does it matter?

: Any advise will be wonderful. Is a petstore an ok source or should we look somewhere else? We live in central Illinois so our choices are limited.
: Thanks in advance!
: Troy
