The bones ARE removed from normal position, but aren't "free floating" like I think is what the myth entails. They do separate though, but are still held together by the elastic ligaments. But the upper and lower jawbone so separate slightly to allow for passage of rodents 1 to 1.5 times the size of the widest point of the body (and those heads are tiny in comparison!). I think the myth here that you're looking at is that no, the jaws aren't completely separated and free floating, but they do have some incredible adaptations that I guess could be loosely considered "unhinging." They don't yawn to realign their jaws for nothing. :) Anyways, I applaud you for putting together a list of some of the horrible misconceptions that people have about these beautiful animals.
