why is cage depth so important, could i get by with just 1f

I am moving into a smaller room for a few months so i am not going to beable to take pumbas cage with me, i found a courio cabinet today that would be perfect to convert into a cage but there is only one problem, it is only 1 foot in depth but it is 5 foot high and 5 across. pumba is 19 inches, do you all think that will work for now, i think he has plenty of room to turn around. Any other ideas would be great to as far as decoration and inside of cage setup would be great. I am lining the inside of it with a type of metal cloth so he can climb. thank you
