In Reply to: Unfortunately CA:P ratio is not the only thing to be concerned with...... posted by jif on January 03, 2001 at 21:44:45:
Thanks for the link to that article, I had read it several times before, but needed a refresher :)
First, note that everything we read pretty much just refers to "cabbage". Is this chinese, red, green, or otherwise?? I dont know...
Well, I still think Chinese Cabbage is OK in terms of an additive vegetable. Of course you would not want your Iguana's diet to consist PRIMARILY of Chinese Cabbage, but as 1/10th of the total mixture, I dont see any real harm.
This goes for virtually any vegetable though. When I do my iguana food shopping, I always try to pick up at least 7 or 8 different leafy greens. I have my regular list from the Iguana Den diet, and then I also bring the list of Ca:P ratios with me, and grab a couple other items that look tasty and healthy. Always some variety, but with some stuff that I buy every time.
I also mix in a little of whatever various melons and fruits I can get my hands on... Not a lot, but a little for the extra nutrients that are not found in the greens.
I guess with all that said, I will tell you all this. Those of you who know me, know that I have not had an Iguana that long, and I am certainly not an expert on the diets of Iguanas. But, I DO know what I have read, and I DO know what has worked for other people.
Both the MK salad and Iguana Den diet recieve high praise here (Ig Den diet more lately). Quite honestly, it is simple enough to take the good points of both diets, combine them, and make your own special diet for your igs, according to what your igs like, what is available in your area, and what you need to buy in order to make up for the essential things you cannot get.
OK, enough out of me!!
Later all,
Mark
: we also have to think about proteins, oxalates, goitrogens and many other compounds. For some easily understandable reading, visit the site below. We just had this discussion, however brief, on the Den list, concerning feeding Kale. Hope this helps some.
