youngsters tend to have better colors that fade with age and shedding.
breeding season may be a factor.
Stress also plays a role, but it would affect the whole body, not just the head.
Some lizards increase their coloration with age, others lose it.
I guess your baby is growing up! check him (her?) out during breeding season. As long as the whole body looks ok, then he's fine. If the entire body looks dull, then it's bad news.
