You have to remember that this is a *wild* animal whose natural instinct is that anything bigger than it wants to eat it! Wonderful tame cuddly iguanas do not happen overnight, or all by themselves. It is the product of a lot of work and yes that includes for some people conquering the fear of being whipped, which is a natural protective reaction.
When an iguana is first brought into a new environment it is stressed and quiet, as soon as they ig gets used to it's new home they will a lot of the time elicit the behaviour that you mention.
Start researching the net on taming methods, and do not give up!! It WILL be reqarding eventually, how long this takes depends on your iguana, maybe 2 months, maybe a year...
